Aging comes to us all and we lose the youthful contours and firmness of our face and neck. As we get older, the facial skin loses elasticity causing wrinkles, folds, lines and jowls. Aging of the skin is often not a reflection of a person’s general state, and many people feel disappointed that their face looks older than they feel and can affect their self-confidence. The rate of skin aging is different for each individual and can be determined by genetics, sun exposure, smoking, some medications as well as stress. Significant weight loss can unfortunately also lead to similar effects on your face and neck.
Rhytidectomy, commonly known as a ‘facelift’, won’t halt the aging process but it will help you to look and feel younger. Typically the rhytidectomy procedure focuses not only on the face but also on the neck and jawline to significantly improve contour in these areas too. After a correctly performed rhytidectomy it shouldn’t be obvious that you have had surgery, but you should look visibly younger and healthier.
Dr. Tregaskiss will listen to your concerns and work with you to ensure the best outcome possible. A number of other procedures, such as fillers, fat transfers and Botox® can be used in combination with surgical techniques to achieve the optimal result for you.
Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)
As we age, the skin become less elastic and loosens, which can cause folds and bagginess in the skin around the upper and lower eyelids. In addition these baggy areas can appear swollen and puffy leaving patients looking tired. Some patients find that the folds and bagginess hang over their eyelashes and impair their vision.
Genetics do play a role in this too, and some individuals notice a change in the appearance of their eyelids during early adulthood, and often one or both of their parents experienced something similar. Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) can be performed to correct this problem at any age.
Blepharoplasty procedure can be performed just to the top, or bottom or both eyelids, depending on your individual needs and preferences. Dr. Tregaskiss can help you make this decision with the knowledge from his clinical experience. The procedure involves removing excess skin, removing or tightening some of the surrounding muscle, and either removing or repositioning some of the fat in the area to create a beautiful and youthful eyelid. The goal of this procedure is to give your eyes a more youthful, refreshed and lifted appearance.
Wrinkles and folds in the forehead can be very bothersome for some people and a brow lift is a surgical way of correcting this visible signs of aging. This surgery can reduce the wrinkles that form across the forehead, frown lines as well as deep creases near the bridge of the nose. It also can correct sagging eyebrows that are obstructing the upper eyelids, and place them in a more youthful position. A combination of fillers, Botox® and surgical techniques can be used together to get the best aesthetic outcome for you depending on your particular needs. Dr. Tregaskiss will spend time with you to understand what aspects bother you most and create a surgical and non-surgical plan that will leave you feeling younger and healthier.
Otoplasty is a cosmetic procedure to correct the appearance of ears, whether they are large, protruding or misshapen (such as cauliflower or cupped ears). Depending on the individual circumstances the surgery can reposition the ears closer to the head (sometimes called “pinning”), reduce the size of the ears, correct asymmetry between ears or reshape any deformities in the cartilage to create a more pleasing appearance. After listening to your concerns and hopes, Dr. Tregaskiss will discuss the options and his recommendations with you during your consultation to achieve the best aesthetic outcome.
Facial Fat Transfer
Tight, unblemished skin together with full facial (fat) volume are the hallmarks of a youthful appearance. The natural aging process leads to a loss of facial fat volume (deflation) resulting in loose skin, wrinkles and even sagging tissue. This is particularly evident around the eyes, temples and cheeks as we age. Interestingly fat deflation in the face still occurs even if we gain weight in other parts of the body with age. Restoration of lost facialvolume with transferred fat can dramatically reverse this process, leading to a younger, refreshed and revitalized appearance. Additionally it has the benefit of frequently improving the quality of the overlying skin.
Fat transfer (also known as fat grafting or autologous fat transplantation) removes fat from one part of the body, typically the abdomen or hips and then strategically injects it into the areas of the face that have lost volume. Facial fat transfer is frequently preformed as part of a face or necklift procedure, or less frequently as part of eyelid surgeries. Additionally it can also be performed as an isolated procedure.
While similar effects can be achieved with synthetic fillers (e.g. Juvederm), in contrast to these products fat transfer utilizes a completely natural product (i.e. your own fat), minimizing the chance of any adverse reactions. Finally the results of fat transfer are permanent as opposed to the temporary results achieved with most synthetic fillers, avoiding the need for further procedures and their associated costs.
