What is Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure meant to enhance the breast size, shape, and volume. Using silicone breast implants or saline breast implants that are inserted below or above the chest muscles, Dr. Tregaskiss can provide patients with the curves they’ve been looking for. The breast implant procedure is often performed to address the loss of breast fullness due to weight loss or pregnancy.
Common reasons patients want a breast augmentation include:
- Volume loss after weight loss, pregnancy, or breastfeeding
- Breast asymmetry
- A personal desire for fuller, more shapely breasts
Breast augmentation surgery is often done on its own, but it can also be combined with other cosmetic procedures, including a tummy tuck, breast lift, arm lift, and more.
Who is a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?
Most patients who are looking to enhance the size of their breasts are good candidates for breast augmentation. Candidates should be:
- In good overall health
- Nonsmokers
- Have realistic expectations
- Does not have any medical conditions that could negatively affect the healing process
- At a stable weight
Dr. Tregaskiss will walk you through a consultation to assess your candidacy and help you feel confident moving forward.
What to Expect: The Breast Augmentation Procedure
The breast augmentation at Pacific Plastic Surgery starts with the administration of general anesthesia. This will ensure you’re completely comfortable throughout the procedure. From there, Dr. Tregakiss will make an incision along the breast, around the nipple, or along the armpit. He will then create a pocket inside the breast to place the silicone implant (silicone gel implant) or saline implant over or under the chest muscles and breast tissue. Once both implants are in place, he will close the incisions, and you’ll be ready to start the recovery process.
Breast Augmentation Recovery
To start your breast implant surgery recovery, you will see some swelling, redness, and bruising, but these side effects will dissipate within a few days to a few weeks. Your breasts will be wrapped in dressings, and you’ll be given a surgical bra to wear to aid the healing process. You’ll also need someone to drive you home from surgery. We will prescribe pain medication to ensure your recovery is as comfortable as possible.
To start your recovery, you should rest as much as possible. We recommend:
- Taking 3–5 days off work
- Sleeping and lying down on your back
- Avoiding strenuous activity for 2–3 weeks
- Avoiding heavy lifting for at least six weeks
As for results, you may see some initial improvements immediately, but most changes will be hidden behind swelling and bruising. It usually takes 6-8 weeks before the final results are fully visible. There will be scar tissue, but that will fade over time.
To ensure your health, you should receive regular breast screenings every few years as well as mammograms to look for breast cancer.
